Free CME: HIPAA Basics: Privacy and Security Issues Self-Study

This HIPAA basics self-study module was developed to meet the privacy and
security educational needs of Mississippi healthcare providers, professionals,
and consumers. The Mississippi Health Information Security and Privacy
Collaboration (HISPC) Final Assessment of Variations and Analysis of Solutions
Report identified the need to create educational materials related to the
private and secure exchange of health information. Findings indicated that
healthcare providers were likely to err on the side of caution in the
interpretation of HIPAA regulations, hampering the flow of patient information.
In addition, there was a general lack of knowledge of state and federal laws
regarding the private and secure exchange of personal health information (PHI)
among healthcare providers. Consequently, it is important to offer educational
information that will aid in finding a balance between a patient's right to
privacy and timely patient care.
