U.S. Department of Labor announces $4 million grant to aid California workers impacted by Base Realignment and Closure actions
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $4 million grant to the state of California to provide services to more than 700 U.S. Department of Defense civilian workers and private contractors affected locally by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) actions.
"This $4 million grant will provide these Californians with job placement assistance, skills training and other re-employment services to help them get started in new careers," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.
This grant, awarded to the California Employment Development Department, will provide direct services in response to job losses. Services will include assessment, counseling, case management, supportive services, job training and development, relocation assistance, job placement and follow-up.
The installations and surrounding areas to be served are: Onizuka Air Force Station, Riverbank Army Ammunition Plant, Beale Air Force Base, Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos, Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, Naval Base Ventura County, Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow and March Air Reserve Base.
Of the $4 million announced today, $1 million will be released initially. Additional funding up to the amount approved will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance. This grant will leverage a previous $1.37 million grant awarded to California in June 2005 specifically for the purpose of planning for BRAC actions.
