TV Program to Spotlight Keeping Children Safe, Ready to Learn

Amid the backdrop of tragic school shootings this year, the U.S. Department of Education's monthly TV show, Education News Parents Can Use, will devote its coverage to the topic of "Reducing School Violence: Keeping Children Safe and Ready to Learn."
The program will be carried from 8 to 9 p.m. EDT Tuesday on the Dish Network, dozens of PBS stations and numerous cable outlets. Others, including The Learning Channel, will broadcast the show on a tape-delayed basis. A complete listing of viewing options is available at

This informative program will examine:

How safe are our nation's schools, and what we need to do to make them even safer?

What are the common characteristics of school-based violence prevention and anti-bullying programs that work?

What does the research tell us about the link between school environment, safety, and learning?

How does No Child Left Behind help protect students -- and those who teach them -- from violence?

What can parents do at home and at school to keep their children safe and ready to learn? And,

How can we identify and help students early to prevent them from doing harm to themselves or others?
Guests include Deborah Price and Bill Modzeleski, the top two officials in the Education Department's Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools. Also appearing will be William Lassiter, manager of the Center for the Prevention of School Violence at the Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in Raleigh, N.C., and Rick Harris, senior director of the Safety, Security and Environmental Services at the Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Fla.
In addition, the show will spotlight West Chicago, Ill. with education and law enforcement officials from there discussing efforts to promote safe and healthy school environments.
