Brookhaven Lab Offers Grants to Promote Diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

May 22, 2008

Written by Joe Gettler

UPTON, NY -- The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory has announced a new grant program to increase interests and strengthen skills in science, technology, engineering, and math among 10- to 15-year-old females, African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos(as), and/or Native Americans. Known as BreakThru Mini-Grants, these one-time grants of up to $5,000 will be competitively awarded to local nonprofit community organizations in Suffolk County.

BreakThru Mini-Grants will be awarded to organizations that can inspire a new generation growing up in an increasingly scientific and technological world. The program was created to foster and develop an interest in science among young people of demographic profiles that are traditionally under-represented in the science, technology, engineering, and math workforce.

The two-year pilot program is funded by Brookhaven Science Associates, which manages Brookhaven Lab. The Laboratory's Community Relations Office will administer it.

Applications for the first round of BreakThru Mini-Grants must be submitted by July 18 for programs operating between September 1, 2008, and August 31, 2009. Applicants are encouraged to apply online at www.bnl.gov/community/breakthru.

For detailed information on the grant program, including eligibility and criteria, go to www.bnl.gov/community/breakthru or contact Jeanne D'Ascoli, (631) 344-2277 or dascoli@bnl.gov.
