AUSTIN, Texas -- FEMA/State Disaster Recovery Centers will close Jan. 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and will reopen Jan. 20 for normal business hours.

After the federal holiday, there will be 10 Disaster Recovery Centers in Harris, Galveston, Orange, Brazoria and Jefferson counties serving the needs of Texans affected by Hurricane Ike.  The centers provide a one-stop location where people can talk face-to-face with state and federal disaster recovery specialists.

FEMA recently extended the deadline to register for disaster assistance to Feb. 6. Residents are encouraged to register with FEMA before visiting a disaster recovery center.

Visitors to recovery centers can:

  • Receive information about different types of state and federal disaster assistance.
  • Get help completing applications for U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)
low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and private nonprofit organizations.
  • Inquire about the status of applications for federal assistance.
  • Receive referrals to voluntary organizations for help with immediate unmet needs.
  • Learn cost-effective measures to reduce the impact of future disaster losses.

Texans who had damage or uninsured losses and have not yet registered can do so online at www.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- and hearing-impaired. Both numbers are available 6 a.m. to midnight daily. A listing of recovery centers is available at www.txdps.state.tx.us/dem/pages/dr1791_drc_list.htm

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
