The California Fair Employment and Housing Commission, located in San Francisco, conducts administrative hearings and issues decisions in employment, housing, and public accommodation discrimination cases prosecuted before it by the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. The Commission also hears accusations alleging bias-motivated violence. In addition, the Commission promulgates regulations interpreting the laws within its jurisdiction.
The Commission is looking for law students with strong research and writing skills, who have a demonstrated interest in civil rights, to work part or full-time for Spring 2009.
The Commission has undertaken to rewrite its current regulations on pregnancy and disability employment discrimination and draft new regulations for housing discrimination. Working with the Commission’s Executive and Legal Affairs Secretary and Commission Administrative Law Judges (ALJs), Commission law clerks will primarily work to:
participate in the regulatory rulemaking process, including considering comments received to the Commission’s proposed regulations on pregnancy and disability employment discrimination
research current case law in housing discrimination
In addition, as needed, Commission law clerks may be asked to:
draft legal memoranda on discrimination issues in pending cases
participate in the collegial review of pending cases
attend adjudicatory Commission hearings, and
attend Commission meetings
We are a small office of three Commission Administrative Law Judges (including the Executive and Legal Affairs Secretary), a Staff Services Manager and two support staff. We provide close supervision and mentoring for our law clerks.
To apply for an FEHC Extern position with the Commission, submit a resume and cover letter to Judge Caroline L. Hunt at the above address by December 15, 2008.
