Time Running Out to Register for First-Ever Cyber Safety Summit

October 11, 2006

Space is filling up quickly for the 2006 California Cyber Safety Summit: Protecting Children Online. The summit will bring together hundreds of parents, educators, technology industry representatives, law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, children’s advocates and others to share information about cyber dangers and best practices for teaching children the safe, smart and legal ways to surf the Internet.

This first-ever summit takes place Wednesday, October 18, 2006, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Sacramento Convention Center. Registration is free and is limited to 1,000. Space is still available, but it is disappearing fast.

"California has led the nation in privacy protection laws and is again leading the nation to combat crimes that threaten our children and their safety," said Charlene Zettel, Director of the California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA).

The Summit will start with a keynote address by Marc Klaas, who heads the KlaasKids Foundation and whose daughter Polly was abducted and murdered in 1993. Two morning panel presentations about cyber crimes and the dangers children face online will follow his remarks. In the afternoon, there will be three breakout sessions where participants can choose from among nine workshops, including:

  • Understanding Cyber Space
  • The Role of Schools in the Online World
  • Online Victimization and How to Avoid It
  • Investigative Tools for Law Enforcement (registration limited to credentialed law enforcement personnel)
  • Internet Safety in the Home
  • Internet Safety in the School
  • Computer and Internet Security in Schools
  • The New Playground: The Safe, Smart & Legal Way
  • Nationally Recognized Cyber Safety Programs
